參加這麼多年的誓師餐會，我頭一遭快要噴淚。最後來大合唱 Do You Hear the People Sing 這一招實在太驚人。如果出發前唱的是 Do You Hear the People Sing 的歌詞，我希望感恩餐會的時候，我們都能一起唱 Epilogue 裡頭同一段旋律的歌詞。

Liberty Equality Fraternity
我上禮拜改了表演的名稱，就是上面這一個，但是第一個字念不出來，因為那是一個意念、一種精神，而不是一個口號。表演要強調的既不是革命，更不是愛情，而是我們必須對人、對事、對物，付出真情，認真執著，才可能改變一個不好的現狀，實現真正的自由、平等、博愛。
每個社會都有不公不義的事情。台灣幾十年來「選擇性」的實施新自由主義（Neoliberalism），但同時卻又「選擇性」的利用民主政治的代議制度來滿足既得利益團體的欲望，導致不公不義的事情愈來愈多。老實說，我們大部份的人都是既得利益團體的一份子，因為我們在這個價值觀狹隘的社會裡，能夠進入好學校就讀，跟腦袋一樣好的人做朋友，多多少少保障了我們在這個社會裡的未來利益。因此，我們很容易滿足於現狀，很容易忽略別人的處境，很容易忘記我們的功成名就不全然是因為自己掙來的（還記得雨果把星星和鴨掌放在一起嗎？），而是因為長輩給了我們一個相對安全且幸福的成長環境。
我們不需要因此而感到愧疚或抱歉，因為出生在什麼樣的環境，擁有什麼樣的腦袋，的確不是我們能夠決定的。但是，同樣地，社會裡頭很多遭遇比我們不好的人，也一樣無辜。所以，我們必須拓寬我們的視野，鍛鍊我們的思考，提高我們的格局，讓我們的所作所為，都能夠讓這個世界更自由、更平等、更博愛。老天爺如果賦予了我們這樣的腦袋，祂就是賦予了我們這個重大的任務。這並不是說大家都要去當革命份子或政治人物；這是一種氣質與精神。有的時候，我們要「有所為」才能對社會有所貢獻（make a difference）；有的時候，則是要有「不作為」（inaction）的意志力與勇氣。
這和樂旗隊有什麼關係？
我們希望藉著這兩年的樂旗隊生活，提供大家一個學習與成長的環境和機會，讓你透過團體生活、透過練習與表演，拓寬視野，鍛鍊思考，提高格局。而對於那些出錢出力出時間、不斷幫助我們的人，無論是爸爸媽媽、師長學長，還是前輩長輩，我們應該要把他們對於我們的付出與關心，當作是對我們的投資：他們投資在我們身上，因為我們有責任、也有能力創造一個更自由、更平等、更博愛的世界。
請不要笑我天真，請不要笑我冠冕堂皇。如果你們知道，跟你們一樣年紀、腦袋卻不一定像你們一樣好的美國高中生在做什麼（請花十三分鐘聽聽這位十八歲的美國高中生在做什麼），你們就知道我不是在唱高調。美國之所以可以成為一個偉大的國家，絕對跟他們的多元價值有很大的關係。雖然美國社會有很多很多問題，但是這並不阻擋他們年輕人敢夢敢做的精神。王戰老師說，建中樂旗隊的精神是「我就不相信我做不到」，那麼更重要的問題就是，「你要做什麼」？
「我要做什麼」這個問題的難度大概跟「我是誰」同一個等級。我真心覺得 Les Misérables 的兩大主軸是「愛」和「我是誰」（想想 Jean Valjean, Javert, Marius, Eponine）。人往往要略懂後者，摸索出一個所以然，才有辦法懂前者。而「我要做什麼」和「我是誰」也一樣密不可分。現代社會很膚淺，所以自我介紹都是學歷和職位（「大家好，我叫范咩咩，我擁有文學博士學位，我下學期即將在台大教書，我有房子，沒有車子......」云云），但這些東西只能代表你是「什麼」（what you are），而非你是「誰」（who you are）。
所以，樂旗隊生活一樣提供你認識自己的機會；認識自己的能耐，檢視自己的態度，剖析自己的想法。這些是所謂「後設認知」（metacognition）的能力，也就是「對自己認知歷程的瞭解」。如果你沒有這種能力，你的學習就會漫無目的，被動而片段。如果能藉著練習與表演，訓練自己後設認知的能力，那你就會對自己更有興趣，發現更有趣的自己，更知道「我是誰」。這樣子，你才會開始讓自己變成更好的人，然後更愛自己。更愛自己之後，你就能慢慢開始愛別人。同時，你也會更清楚自己要「做什麼」，才能讓你所愛的人過更好的生活。
請不要覺得以上這段非常風花雪月或虛無縹緲。不信的話，想想後援會爸爸媽媽對我們無怨無悔的付出（unrequited love）。而且，我相信你的生命中一定已經有幾個類似的經驗（無論成敗好壞），可以套用上一段的邏輯。
進入 Epilogue 前的歌詞是雨果在小說中寫下的話：and remember the truth that was once spoken, to love another person is to see the face of God （愛人如同見證上帝）。
認識自己才會愛自己。愛自己才會愛別人。愛別人才能看見更大更寬廣的世界。然後，我們對我們身處的世界才會有所期待，有所企盼，有所貢獻。
